Weekly Practical Stewardship Tip Archive

January 15, 2007

Mitch Maloney
Senior Pastor,
North Cleveland Church of God, Cleveland, TN.

"Here is the advice I would give pastors about preaching and teaching stewardship. The principles that are set out in God's word are universal. They work not only for one church, they work for every church. They will not only work in America, they work any place where there is somebody who believes in God's word and practices them. A lot of pastors are afraid to preach and teach about money. I have to admit, there are people that really tighten up when you start talking about money. You can see it on their facial expressions, but here is the conclusion I came to. In Malachi chapter 2 vs. 7-8, God has an issue with Israel and in particularly with the priests. He says the lips of the priest ought to preserve knowledge and from his mouth, men should seek instruction.

He tells the priests you have turned from the way and by your teaching have
caused many to stumble. When I fail to preach and teach what God's word is
to his people, then I cause the people to stumble. God had an issue with all of Israel because the priests were not doing what they were supposed to do, and the people were following suit. If I as a Pastor will lead the way
and teach the Word and let them know that I am teaching it because I love
them and God loves them, the people hear the Word and respond to it. Every
time I have taught on stewardship, people have responded in a positive way. I have had people to thank me afterwards."

Jerry Madden,
Pastor of the Church of God in Greer, S.C.
Chairperson of the Stewardship Ministries Advisory Board

"When it comes to issues of stewardship I would tell any pastor to “set the example” before the people, both personally and corporately. This was Paul’s message to Titus, “In everything set them an example by doing what is good.. (Titus 2:7).” It is one thing to preach stewardship, but people listen more to how we live than what we preach. So Pastor, as you preach it, set the example. Let them know you are a faithful tither. Since stewardship involves more than money, let them see you being a good steward of your time, your family, your talents, of everything God has entrusted to you. When people see stewardship modeled in your life they are more open to pursuing it in their life.

Further, let your people understand your church embraces stewardship. In a time when many in the church are inwardly focused, purpose your congregation to look outwardly. Rejoice in Missions Giving. Celebrate in ministering to local charities. True joy and blessings never comes personally or corporately by what we gain, but by what we give!"

Terry Harris,
Pastor of the East Ridge Church of God

"If I could talk to pastors who are hesitant about teaching stewardship, I would tell them they are missing out on miracles. They are robbing their people from understanding what's wrong in their lives. Their people don't know that the tithe is holy and belongs to the Lord unless somebody tells them that. And when people are eating the seed and not bringing it into the storehouse, they are creating problems for themselves and the Kingdom. I would tell pastors that they have stunted the growth of their whole church if they are not teaching stewardship."
